Dreaming of Red Mansions is a series of augmented reality experiences created in Spark AR, presented in the form of a Twine game. Loosely inspired by Cao Xueqing’s classic novel The Story of the Stone, the work reimagines the palace of the goddess Disenchantment set in ‘The Land of Illusion’. Using the architectural structure as framework, the filters operate as digital portals into the fictional world, superimposing virtual environments onto the user’s immediate physical surroundings. Combining audio-visual elements and text, the work is a mediation on memory and nostalgia for a home that no longer exists, or never existed.
